Success Stories

Musabyemariya Josephine is a 52 years old woman with two children, she is also one of the beneficiaries of Act For Solutions (AFS)’s interventions in her community.
I benefited a lot from AFS intervention especially the women saving groups initiative. Through saving groups, we were able to work together as poor people to improve our living standards. With the support of AFS, we have opportunities to meet and talk about socio-economic needs and find ways to lift ourselves out of poverty by putting our efforts together. For instance, through this saving scheme, all group members have been able to buy mattresses for our families. AFS also built our skills in creation of small and medium income generating projects”. Personally, I used to borrow not more than 30,000frw from my group, which I could use to buy and sell groceries in my village. I progressed to mushroom growing and poultry keeping which have enabled me finance the education of my two children. As I was doing these businesses, I was able to progressively renovate my house which I later sold at 12,000,000 Rwf (around 14,000 USD) and bought another house on a bigger plot of land. I am proud that one of my children has recently completed tertiary education while the other is in secondary as a result of AFS’s empowerment initiatives. Today, I am happy to be one of the community facilitators in my village where AFS is supporting poor people to start environmentally sensitive projects for socio-economic development. I am quite positive that with joint efforts and commitment poverty can be overcome irrespective of one’s age, gender or socio-economic status.
